Research Accomplishments: 
  1. On cardamom crop in Western Ghats of Karnataka 10-15 applications of insecticides were being applied to protect the crop from insect pests damage. My research from 1983-88 reduced the number of pesticidal applications to only 2 with cultural and mechanical practices as tools of Integrated Pest Management. This strategy also implemented in cardamom growing areas of Tamilnadu and Kerala.
  2. In Chikmagalur and Shimoga districts, Areca root grubs was a major threat to Areca cultivation. A pest management strategy based on detailed bioecology of root grubs was evolved from experiments 1988-93 and it was possible and practicable to manage root grubs and protect the crop.
  3. The feasibility of using pheromones for management of cardamom shoot and fruit borer (Conogethes punctiferalis) in evergreen tropical forest tracts of Western Ghats was tested and experimented.
  4. A model based on phenology of old world cottons for protecting the plant against major insect pests in Punjab was developed and entomologists from over 25 countries evinced interest in the model. Sampling procedures for certain important cotton insect pests in Punjab were standardised.
  5. An Integrated pest management strategy to protect crops from vertebrates was devised for the first time. This strategy involved cultural, mechanical and chemical tools that are cheap, effective and practicable.
  6. A comprehensive technique for screening in field as well as in laboratory the Fieldbean germplasm (Lablab niger) against pod borers has been developed.
  7. Role of insectivorous birds in devouring pod borers that form a major constraint to increasing yields in Fieldbean (Lablab niger )  was evaluated and the manner in which bird predation could be integrated with components of IPM on Fieldbean was effected.
  8. The potential of woodpeckers in devouring cardamom shoot and fruit borer (Conogethes punctiferalis) was determined and measures to sustain useful activities of the birds in cardamom plantations was advanced.
  9.  A simple method of protecting crops especially paddy from wild boar, Sus scrofa by suspending Thimet 10 % G granules in selected borders was perfected. This method saved, on an average 10 % losses in rice yields alone in Malnad region.
  10.  An integrated method to protect cardamom from rodents was found. This includes timely harvesting, overlapping panicles one over other, clean cultivation, wooden snap trapping and suspending Rodocake/Bromodiolone baits during fruiting season.
  11. A cultural tool to avoid damage of the grainivorous birds on paddy was found in Malnad region. This by synchronizing the maturing of paddy varieties in the effective feeding territory of the birds.
  12. Grainivorous birds damage on Sorghum and Pearl millet in and around Bangalore was significantly reduced by growing few rows of Navane (Setaria italica) around the field.
  13. Role of common prey birds in devouring rodent pests in and around Bangalore was evaluated and it was found that stray birds significantly contribute for reduction in rat population. Therefore the need for conserving prey birds in city environs.
  14. Cultural/habitat modifications for the management of birds hazardous to aviation in and around Delhi airport was suggested to prevent bird aircraft collisions.
  15. Effect of drought on birds of Bharthpur Wildlife Sanctuary, Rajasthan was investigated and measures to check adverse effects on birds in case of drought in future, was suggested.
  16. Adverse effects of growing Eucalyptus in the wet tropical forest tracts in Malnad on environmental quality and wildlife was investigated. Eucalyptus groves proved inimical to wildlife and environment quality.
  17. Value of parks and gardens in Bangalore city from scientific, aesthetic, economic, ecological and environmental points of view was determined.
  18. Effects of urbanisation on the avifaunal community of Bangalore were pin-pointed and conservation practices for birds in urban set-up were suggested.
  19. I helped /prepared checklist of birds of a) Hill region of Karnataka. b) Punjab and Chandigarh and c) Bangalore for the first time.
  20. Management practices for protecting potatoes (grown in transitional Zone of Karnataka) from insect and mites pests was evolved after five years research.
  21. Vertebrate pest management practices in hill and coastal zone of Karnataka for coconut, arecanut, banana, fruit orchards, paddy and certain vegetable crops were recommended after multilocation trials over four years. The practices were practicable and adopted by the growers.
  22. A Directory of wetlands of 23 districts of Karnataka was prepared and submitted to the department of Environment, Ecology and Forests, Government of Karnataka.
