COMBINED IN VITRO AND IN VIVO APPROACHES FOR THE RAPID CLONAL PROPAGATION OF GRAPES

Technology Description

  • The methodology employs a combination of tissue culture and ex vitro techniques.
  • Tissue culture-part involves the in vitro multiplication using microcuttings and the use of rooted plants and stumps for acclimatization. The ex vitro part involves use of single node softwood cuttings.
  • Suitable for the bulking of elite varieties, new breeds and exotic introductions from a limited planting material, particularly for shy-propagators. Worked out for the black seedless grape “Arka Neelamani’.
  • Ideally suitable for root stocks like Dogridge

Products and By- products.

  • Micropropagated plants supplied in polybags, ready for field plating
  • Possibility of supplying in vitro stock cultures

Technology Benefits

  • Rapid multiplication with the potential of over 1-10 million plants per year
  • Tissue culture-based in vitro multiplication
  • Use of in vitro-reject stumps for the ex vitro planting
  • Root pruning practice and sachet method of acclimatization
  • Ex vitro step in the multiplication is simple and needing very limited infrastructure
  • Possibility of keeping the plants in the original polythene bag used for the sachet technique of acclimatization for 6-12 months

Target segment /End User Profile

  • Tissue culture units
  • Horticulture nurseries
  • Commercial growers

Market potential

To meet the immediate demand for large scale plating material or grapes, including root stocks

Investment Required

Can be taken up as an additional item to an existing tissue culture unit with the utilization of buffer space. Potential of growing ≥ one million plants per year starting from limited initial tissue / explant.

Expected Returns/Profit

  • Costs about Rs. 1-2 to raise a plant.
  • Cost benefit ratio is 1: 5.

Note: Technique can be refined or optimized for the variety of choice to the entrepreneurs on specific request
