FARMERS EXPOSURE VISIT CONDUCTED BY ICAR KVK GONIKOPPAL (IIHR-Bengaluru) WITH FUNDING SUPPORT FROM NABARD
ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gonikoppal, Kodagu organized a farmers exposure visit of planters from Virajpet Taluk, Kodagu districtict, with funding support from NABARD. Mr.Veerendra Kumar K.V, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection), KVK, Gonikoppal was the Tour leader and started the exposure visit on 20.03.2017 with 30 farmers belonging to different farmers clubs. The farmers were first taken to a progressive black pepper farmers plot at Kedaga village of K.R.Nagara Taluk’(Mysore district), where Black Pepper under is being grown under dry land situation with 900 vines in s 1.5 acre area. In his 1.5 acre area, he had harvested 2.2 tonne dry Black pepper.
Then the farmers were taken to a progressive awardee planter field at H.Hosalli village of Mudigere Taluk, Chikkamagalur district where Mr. Surendra is practicing Coffee based cropping system. He is one of the best Black pepper growers in India with the production potential of 80-120 kg green Black Pepper per vine. He is also practicing Integrated Farming System, Vietnam method of black Pepper production, ginger cultivation, fisheries and dairy farming etc.
On day two visited Zonal Agriculture and Horticulture Research Station, Mudigere, where we saw model demonstration units of pepper, Paddy varieties and model nursery units of Areca nut, Minor fruits, pepper. Here farmers learnt about single node method of Black pepper nursery, seed rhizome cultivation and selecting disease free planting material for their use. Dr.Swamy, Dr.Ramya and Dr.Rashmi. Assistant Professor, briefly explained about the activities of ZAHRS and practically shown the selection of disease free materials, single node method of nursery preparation, etc. Later we visited ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mudigere –Dr.Bharath, Programme Coordinator, Dr.Girish, KVK, Mudigere explained about the activities carried out by the KVK and different demonstrations units like nursery, piggery and Goat stall feeding units.
Later the farmers were taken to a private Piggery breeding farm of M/s Souza Pig Breeding Centre, Madeneralu village of Chikkamagaluru Taluk where we saw the practical rearing practices of piggert in low cost manner, using waste feeding and good managemental practices for profitable piggery enterprise. Mr. Amar D Souza and Mrs.Geetha D Souza shared their practical experience in running the piggery farm under sustainable profitability.
With all these visits, interaction and live demonstrations the farmers got very good knowledge about agriculture and allied field operation for further strengthening their present practices and in turn getting good return. The farmers appreciated the efforts put by KVK Gonikoppal in organising the exposure visit and thanked NABARD for supporting the exposure visit programme.
