Research Accomplishments: 

• Developed an Integrated Management strategy for tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera using HaNPV (Nuclear polyhedrosis virus) and egg parasitoid, Trichogramma pretiosum. Two sprays of HaNPV @ 250 LE ha-1 + 0.01% triton x –100 + 1% jaggery at weekly intervals right from flowering and six releases of parasitoid, Trichogramma pretiosum @ 2,50,000 adults ha-1 at weekly intervals gave 80.8% reduction in fruit damage and 74.0% yield increase over control. • Developed an oil formulation of Nomuraea rileyi (entomopathogenic fungi) for the management of tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera. Five sprays of gingelly oil formulation of Nomuraea rileyi at weekly intervals right from flowering gave 81.2% reduction in fruit damage and 65.5% yield increase over control. • Developed and demonstrated (on-farm) an IPM module for the management of major insect pests (fruit borer, white fly and leaf minor) of tomato. For fruit borer: two sprays of HaNPV @ 250 LE ha-1 + 0.01% triton x –100 + 1% jaggery and Six releases of parasitoid, Trichogramma pretiosum @ 2,50,000 adults ha-1 at weekly intervals; For leaf minor: One spray of imidachloprid @ 0.05% 15 days after planting (DAP) and for whitefly: One spray of pongemia oil @ 2.5% at 30 DAP. The module has been successfully tested in farmer’s field at Thirumalapura village, Hessaraghatta, Bangalore. • Developed a mycoinsecticide for the management of diamond backmoth, Plutella xylostella on cabbage. Three sprays of entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae @ 1.7 x 108 spores/ml at weekly intervals right from primordial initiation gave 81.5 % reduction in larval population and 22.5% yield increase over control. • Developed an IPM package for the control of diamond backmoth, Plutella xylostella on cabbage. Three sprays of neem seed powder @ 4.0% at fortnightly interval right from primordial initiation, three sprays of Bacillus thuringiensis (Btk) @ 1g/l at fortnightly interval right and six releases of parasitoid, Trichogramma bactrae @ 2.5 lakh ha-1 at weekly interval gave significant reduction in larval population and marketable cabbage yield of 40 tonnes/ha. • A management strategy for the control of fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera in okra has been developed. Three sprays of HaNPV @ 250 LE ha-1 + Btk 0.5g/l + Teepol 0.01% + jaggery 1% at weekly intervals right from flowering and three sprays of endosulfan 2.0 ml/l at weekly intervals gave a reduction of 75.0% fruit damage and yield increase of 32.5% over control. • A management strategy for the control of citrus butterfly, Papilio demoleus in citrus has been developed. Five sprays of Bacillus thuringiensis (Btk) @ 1 kg/ha at weekly interval gave 97.7% reduction of larval population over control. • Developed an integrated disease management strategy for bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) in tomato. Seed or seedling treatment with Pseudomonas fluorescens (@ 1.0 x 108 cfu/ml) and transplanting in soil amended with green manure (Sunnhemp) gave 87.9% reduction in wilt incidence and 69.1% yield increase over control. • Developed an integrated disease management strategy for bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) in brinjal. Seed or seedling treatment with Pseudomonas fluorescens (@ 1.0 x 108 cfu/ml) and transplanting in soil amended with green manure (Sunnhemp) gave 75.6% reduction in wilt incidence and 65.3% yield increase over control. • Record of insect pathogens: For the first time in India, epizootic occurrence of the entomopathogenic fungus, Entomophthora sp. on pomegranate aphids, Aphis punicae was reported. A nuclear polyhedrosis virus was isolated from the pomegranate hairy caterpillar, Trabala vishnov and reported for the first time in India. A nuclear polyhedrosis virus has been isolated from the diseased ber hairy caterpillars, Thiocidas postica and reported for the first time in India. An entomopathogenic fungus Paecilomyces farinosus has been isolated for the first time in India from the diseased pre-pupae and pupae of pomegranate butterfly, Trabala vishnou. Natural incidence of the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana was reported on mango stone weevils for the first time in India. • Technology for pomegranate bacterial blight management under NHM sponsored Network project on “Mitigating the bacterial blight disease of pomegranate in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh” has been demonstrated in three districts of Karnataka, viz. Sira in Tumkur district, Hiriyur in Chitradurga district and Jagalur in Davanagere district.
