Research Accomplishments:

Technology developed: Mucuna pruriens var utilis • Two superior selections of Mucuna pruriens var utilis were released. • Arka Dhanwantri. gives high yield with high L-DOPA seeds have shiny black seed coat and has a duration of 180 days. • Arka Aswini an early maturing line (120 days ) with high seed yield and L-dopa content . These lines do not possess itchy trichomes on pods and are suitable for commercial cultivation Released varieties as co contributor • Aerobic rice Anagha BI-33 (ARB-6) is released and recommended for aerobic situation in zone 5 of Karnataka. • Arka Aswagandha a high root yielding line of Aswagandha ( Withania somnifera) with higher chemical content is released from Institute Under Pipeline Mucuna pruriens • Promising advance breeding lines with high seed yield, and, high L-dopa content over the released lines are in pipeline Betelvine ( Piper betel) • Two high yielding promising clones of betelvine, Godi Bangla (female) and Swarna kapoori (male) identified • Promising betelvine hybrids HY 06-1, 06-4, 06-11 showed good plant growth and vigor both in field and shade net conditions are under Multi location trail Significant Research Accomplishments Mucuna pruriens • Large germplasm collected through exploration and from secondary sources are maintained. Germplasm lines were characterized for different growth and yield traits and L-dopa. • Traits for possible descriptors identified ( 4 vegetative traits, 15 Inflorescence and fruit traits and 9 seed traits). • Donors for high L-Dopa content were identified from the germplasm for further utilization in breeding studies. Betelvine ( Piper betel) • Large germplasm being maintained at Central Horticultural Experimental Station (CHES), Hirehalli. • Molecular characterization of germplasm through ISSR markers • Studies on DUS traits development • Studies on floral biology were carried out and hybridization techniques, methods for hybrid seed germination and seedling rising were standardized. • For the first time large hybrid population developed in this crop • Interspecific hyridisation to transfer resistance to Phytophthora wilt using P. colubrinum is on the way • Studies on Sexual dimorphism and related traits in flowering hybrids • Sex linked SCAR marker developed from ISSR markers reported for the first time • Garcinia indica:Different floral variants (male , hermaphrodite and functionally male with rudimentary stigma) in Garcinia indica were recorded and plus tree identified for yield • Bixa orellano: Bixa collections were studied for morphological and floral variations and were calssified into four distinct morpho types. Bixin estimations showed that the plants with bright red pods had higher bixin content. • Aonla : NA 7 recorded high fruit yield and and NA 10 has shown early bearing under Bangalore conditions
