Preventing extinction and improving conservation status of threatened plants through application of biotechnological tools

  • Survey and eco distribution mapping of medicinally important species viz., Madhuca insignis using ENM.
  • Population studies on the above species.
  • Studies on Tissue Culture propagation of M.insignis
  • Genetic fidelity testing of in vitro raised plants for M.insignis



Achievements/ Salient findings:


Distribution mapping of Madhuca insignis:


Ecological niche modelling was done using Diva-GIS and Maxent Software.


Population study:

  1. Number of population (inventory): Done- Small population -Kuape and large population – Seetha nadi
  2. Number of Individual per population/ density:

    1. Kaupe- 2 individuals well grown plants

    2. Seetha nadi- 27 individuals ranging from seedling to well grown

  3. Age/diameter distribution among adults:

    1. Kaupe- 2 individuals well grown plants (30 -35yrs)

    2. Seetha nadi- 27 individuals ranging from seedling to well grown(2-15yrs)

  4. Adult-sapling-seedling population:

In the region near Seetha nadi the ratio of adult to seedling is 7:15


Exploration, collection and documentation of M. insignis:


  • An exploration and collection mission was undertaken for collection of RET species M. insignis and documentation of its population in Udupi District, Karnataka.
  • Seedlings collected are currently being maintained at IIHR. Ground planting in order to have a FGB will be taken up on the advent of rainy season.


In vitro propagation of Madhuca insignis:


  • Seeds were sown and the germination rate was observed to be very low. For germination a mixture of sand and soil was used. Only 2 Seedlings were obtained, which are being maintained.
  • Tissue culture propagation has been initiated for Madhuca insignis.
