Research Accomplishments: 

Established the seed origin of spongy tissue in Alphonso mango, a physiological disorder and worked out the complete biochemical mechanism preceding the event. An eco-friendly formulation was developed and field tested to prevent the spongy tissue formation in Alphonso mango. Results of the field trials conducted in farmers gardens in Konkan Maharashtra from 2007-2011 have confirmed the effectiveness of the preharvest treatment formulation in reducing the incidence of the disorder to around 5% as against 80% in untreated fruits. Commercialization of the product is awaited.

Under the neem project, the insect repellant nature of volatiles of neem cake was established. The composition of volatiles from neem cake was determined by GCMS and the active components responsible for the insect repellant action were identified. A process was developed to trap the volatiles on a carrier which was used to repel the diamond backmoth infestation in cabbage. Based on the findings from field trials, the process for control of insect pests in horticultural crops was developed . The patent for the process is pending.

The mechanism of resistance in chayote to melon fly infestation was found to be related to the concerted action of free radicals and scavenging enzymes. Proved that the resistance of chayote against melon fly was the result of antibiosis and not due to antixenosis.

Worked out the detailed mechanism of corky tissue development in sapota, a physiological disorder.

Developed a protocol for the field collection and in vitro germination of coconut embryos. This technique is being widely used for exploration of coconut germplasm from Pacific ocean islands and other remote locations around the world • Purified and Characterized the PGIP from anthracnose resistant and susceptible chilli varieties. Determined the partial amino acid sequence of PGIP.
