XXXV Group Meeting of Vegetable research workers of All India Coordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops was held from 24-27th June, 2017 at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru

As a part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of ICAR-IIHR, 35th Group Meeting of Vegetable research workers of All India Coordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops was held from  24 -27th June, 2017 at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. Inaugural session was chaired by Dr Kirti Singh, an eminent Horticulturalist of the country, Ex- Chairman, ASRB, New Delhi and Ex-Vice Chancellor, IGKVV, Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Dr.M.R. Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru welcomed all the delegates belonging to various ICAR Institutes, SAU’s and Private seed company representatives who have come from different parts of the country.

This was followed by the Project Coordinators Report presented by Dr A B Rai, , Project Coordinator I/C, Vegetable Crops, IIVR, Varanasi. Dr.B.Singh, Director, IIVR, Varanasi gave his remarks. Key note address was given by Dr.T.Janakiram, ADG (HS), ICAR, New Delhi. Dr A K Singh, DDG (HS), ICAR, New Delhi in his  Inaugural address emphasized the importance of coordinated trials and told that this was the 3rd largest group after wheat and rice. He also wished the delegation with fruitful deliberations for four days on various aspects related to Indian Vegetable production. Dr.Kirti Singh gave the Presidential address. During the inaugural session, two publications viz., the Annual report of the AICRP on VC for the year 2016-17 and the Salient Achievements of the Division of Vegetable Crops, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru were released by Dr.Kirti Singh and Dr. A K  Singh respectively.  The session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. A. T. Sadashiva, Head, Division of Vegetable Crops & Organizing Secretary of the Group Meeting of AICRP on VC. 

The Group meeting consisted of 12 technical sessions and a Plenary session spread over  for four days covering Performance Evaluation, Collection, Conservation & Evaluation of Germplasm, Varietal Evaluation, Hybrid Evaluation, Vegetable Production, Evaluation for Biotic and Abiotic Stresses, Physiology, Biochemistry and Processing, Insect Pest Management, Disease Management, Protected Cultivation, Seed Production, Breeder Seed Production and Price Fixation and Public Private Interface (Discussion with private sector). All these sessions were chaired and co-chaired by eminent scientists who have vast experience in their respective subject area and gave their valuable suggestions and recommendations for further improvement in the performance of the the centres.

About 250 scientists from all over the country have participated in the meeting. On second day evening after the sessions, Ph D students of IARI-IIHR organized a Cultural Program for the delegates who assembled from far of places of the country.  On the 3rd day afternoon, all the delegates were taken to the Vegetable Variety and Technology Demonstration Unit of ICAR, IIHR wherein more than 60 vegetable varieties of 24 vegetbale crops were showcased by adopting improved production technology. Breeder seed prices were fixed for various vegetable crops in consultation with the breeding centres on the basis of cost of production and other factors.

On the fourth day the Plenary Session was chaired by Dr. Manmohan Attavar, Chairman, Indo-American Hybrid Seeds Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru who introduced first Tomato hybrids in the country. He was felicitated by M R Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IIHR for his significant contributions for the development of vegetable seed industry in the country. Dr Manmohan Attavar  also visited the Vegetable Demonstration Unit and appreciated the varieties and technologies displayed there by the Division of Vegetable Crops, ICAR-IIHR. 

Various technical session reports with recommendations and the technical program for 2017-18 were presented by the Rapporteurs of the respective sessions.  Finally based on the 3 years performance, best suitable varieties, hybrids were identified for National release in vegetable crops for various agro climatic zones of the country. ICAR-IIHR Dolichos bean advanced breeding line, IIHR-162-2 was recommended for Zone 7 and 8. It is an high yielding, pole type with white flowers, pods are flat,  green long (around 18cm), smooth,  mainly suitable for winter with an yield potential of 28-30t/ha in 120-130 days. Several economical and effective recommendations on disease, pest and fertilizer management were also identified for the successful cultivation of various vegetable crops at national level.  At the end, the concluding remarks were given by Dr. B.Singh, IIVR and vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. A.B Rai from IIVR, Varanasi.
