Interactive Meet on Urban Horticulture organised at Central Horticultural Experiment Station (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar

An Interactive Meet on Urban Horticulture was organised jointly by Central Horticultural Experiment Station (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar and Plant Lovers’ Association, Bhubaneswar on 24th Sept 2019 at CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar. The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Sri. Gadadhar Mahapatra, Ex-IFS officer and Guest of Honour Dr. P. C. Lenka, Ex-Head, Department of Fruit science, OUAT, Bhubaneswar. At the outset Dr. P. Srinivas, Principal Scientist, welcomed the guests and the participants, followed by brief introductions on Urban Horticulture by Dr. K. Kishore, Senior Scientist and Coordinator of the meet and on Plant Lovers’ Association (PLA) by Sri. Khirod Pattanaik, President of PLA. The Guest of honour Dr. P. C. Lenka elaborated on the need for continuous efforts for promotion of horticulture of all forms and integration of technologies for sustaining the production and quality of produce. Chief Guest Sri. Gadadhar Mahapatra enlightened the audience on the intricacies of home gardens. He emphasised on the aspects of nutrition, availability, health and pleasure aspects of home gardening in urban areas. He shared his experiences of growing vegetables, fruits, herbs, orchids etc in his roof tops and backyards.

During the technical session deliberations and presentations on issues related to Roof top gardening, Backyard gardening, Interior planting, balcony gardening, household waste composting, organic methods for home gardening, methods of propagation of plants, potting mixture, pest and disease management, etc, were be made by the experts and practitioners.  Presentations, respectively, on ‘Home gardening as a component of Urban Horticulture’ were made by Sri. Maheshwar Khillar, Managing Trustee of Kitchen Garden Association, Bhubaneswar, ‘Fruit crops suitable for urban horticulture’ by Dr. Kundan Kishore, Senior Scientist, ‘Vegetable crops suitable for urban horticulture’ by Dr. P. Naresh, Scientist, ‘Floral and ornamental crops for urban horticulture’ by Dr. Pragnanshree Mishra, Asst Professor, College of Horticulture, OUAT, Chilima; ‘Organic methods for managing pest and diseases in urban horticulture’ by Dr. Ekadashi Nandi, Consultant, Organic farming; ‘Composting household waste for home gardens’ by Sri. Narasingha Panigrahi, SDRC, ‘Organic methods for sustaining home gardens’; Smt. Pushpa Panda, Prerana Foundation; ‘Irrigation solutions for Roof top gardens’ by Sri. Mangal Vijay, Freelance Entrepreneur and on ‘Schemes and other government support for urban horticulture’ by Sri Pratyosh Panda, ADH, DoH, Bhubaneswar, were made during the technical session. Some presentations on the expressions and experiences of the City Farmers were also made during the interactions and deliberations. Stalls on organic inputs for home gardening, planting material of fruits and vegetables, hand tools, grow bags, irrigation solutions, composting solutions, etc were also put up for the benefit of the participants. More than 80 persons participated in the Meet. The meet was coordinated by Dr. Kundan Kishore, Senior Scientist, along with Dr. P. Srinivas, Principal Scientist, Dr. P. Naresh, Scientist, Sri Abhimanyu Das, Technical Assistant, Sri B. C. Patra, Senior Technician and Sri B. Paikkara, SSS.
