Rose onion exhibition as traditional crop, GI TAG at Lalbaugh 23-25 December, 2017

Rose onion, traditional crop with geographical indicator (gi) tag from Bengaluru, Kolar, Chikkaballaur geographical area, was exhibited at traditional horticultural crops mela organized by Department of horticulture and HOPCOMS, government of Karnataka on 23-25.12.2017 for popularization of traditional crops, their utility as nutritional and medicinal value crops among publics at lalbaugh.

ICAR-IIHR promoting rose onion crop for export from past 16 years. The technological interventions namely improved varieties, quality seeds, drum seeder for seed sowing, good agricultural practice (GAP), Post-harvest technology, storage and Value addition in the form of dehydration, paste making, minimal process and bottle preservation technologies have been developed and being implemented through Farmers producers companies (FPO). ICAR-IIHR working with farmers, FPOS, horticulture department and Vikram global exporter company for promoting rose onion for export. Five hundred tons of  good quality rose onion bulbs from both Kharif and Rabi season of 2016-17 have been exported by Vikram Global export Company which has been associated with Horticultural department under PPP—IHD  programme. ICAR-IIHR is giving technical guidance A-Z for export. ICAR- IIHR developed two varieties in rose onion namely Arka Bindu and Arka Vishwas. Arka Bindu is national notified variety released at state level well accepted by importers in many countries and nick named as 4G rose onion and it is in very big demand and local variety is named as 2G Rose onion which is in less demand. Arka Bindu fresh bulbs and processed products were exhibited in the Traditional Horticultural crops Mela. Shree Prabhath chandra Ray, Horticulture commissioner and Director, Department of Horticulture inaugurated the mela and appreciated the participants and product exhibitors in the Mela. He appreciated the research efforts, technology dissemination, export promotion and value addition activities of ICAR-IIHR for rose onion.
