SACHET TECHNIQUE FOR THE SMALL-SCALE ACCLIMATIZATION OF MICROPROPAGATED PLANTS

Primary tabs

Technology

  • Sachet technique is a simple method for acclimatization of micropropagated plants giving 80-100% ex vitro establishment in different crop plants. The method makes use of simple polythene bags with the conventional planting medium. The in vitro rooted plants are plated after root pruning and the bag is incubated under low light conditions. This allows the single-step plating and acclimatization with the feasibility of keeping the plants in the same polybags till the filed plating. The method works for a variety of crops.
  • The method also can be used effectively for the rooting of soft wood cuttings.

HIGHLIGHTS/ ADVANTAGES/ UNIQUENESS/BENEFITS OF THE TECHNOLOGY

  1. Efficient method for acclimatization with minimum inputs and cost
  2. Works for a variety of crops-
    • Grape, banana, pomegranate, citrus,
    • Watermelon, tomato, chilli,
    • Chrysanthemum
  3. Plants can be kept in the same bag (upto 6 months) till field plating in the case of perennial crops
  4. Suitable for small-scale production units, and at village level units without much infrastructure needs

Market Potential

  • Investment required: Re 1 per plant.
  • Expected profit: Rs. 3-10 per plant depending on the crop
  • Cost Benefit Ratio: 1:10
