Biochemistry (Plant Sciences)

PhD
Research Accomplishments:

(During the Period of 2019-2023)

  1. Experiments on regular (Totapuri, Amrapali) and alternate bearing (Alphonso, Dashehari) mango varieties revealed that the expression of the floral repressor gene (SVP1) has a profound influence on the alternate bearing nature despite basal expression of the floral inducer genes (CO, Ft, SOC, LFY & AP)
  2. In the biannual bearing mango variety Royal Special, the expression of the repressor gene SVP1 was higher during off-season flowering (Jun-Aug), than during on-season flowering (Dec-Jan)
  3. In all these mango varieties, there was translocation of metabolites from the source to the sink at apical meristem during transition from vegetative to reproductive phase; hormone levels of salicylic acid, methyl jasmonate, GA4 and abscisic acid also played a significant role
  4. The Glycemic Index of germinated millet incorporated mango, pineapple, and pomegranate RTS beverages ranged between 98.64 and 129.16%
  5. Protein bioavailability in Alphonso mango fruit bars fortified with whey protein (1 to 5%) increased linearly with the whey protein content
  6. Methanol and ethanol extracts of jackfruit seed powder inhibited the multiplication of human carcinoma cell line A375 (skin cancer cells) after 72 hours of incubation; ethanolic extract of G3 gumless (white) jackfruit seeds exhibited the maximum inhibition of 82.4%, the methanolic extract of G31 Kerala (yellow type) exhibited inhibition of 74.4%, both at 10 μg/ 100 μl concentration
  7. The content of ergothioneine, a strong antioxidant and antimutagen, in 23 mushroom spp. ranged between 0.04 mg/ g DW in Hericium erinaceus to 4.23 mg/ g DW in Pleurotus cintrinopileatus. In general, the pileus had over twice the ergothioneine content of the stipe
  8. Jackfruit collections - white, yellow and orange pulp colour - were extracted in different solvents; the methanolic and aqueous extracts yielded the highest phenolics and antioxidant activity. White color pulp had the highest flavonoids (0.16 mg CAE/g), yellow had the highest phenols (0.36 mg GAE/g) and antioxidant values (12.93 mg/100 g)
  9. Aptamers were selected against live Salmonella cells, from a highly randomized (1013) N80 oligonucleotide ssDNA library through whole cell-SELEX (Systemic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment) process. The highly specificity aptamer candidates were identified after cloning and sequencing, modified by 5’ thiolation, conjugated to gold colloid nanoparticles (AuNP) to optimize the aggregation of the AuNP-aptamer-Salmonella target complex, using NaCl. This complex was able to detect Salmonella at a dilution of 106 to 108 cfu/ml dilution
