OFF CAMPUS TRAINING ON MUSHROOM CULTIVATION FOR ENHANCEMENT OF INCOME AND NUTRITON AT MANDYA

Shri Dharmasthala grama avirudhi Yojane (R), Mandya in collaboration with IIHR organized a one day orientation program to create awareness about income and nutrition enhancement through mushroom cultivation at Mandya on 07-07-14. The program was attended by Shri K. Rudresh, Deputy Director Horticulture, Mandya, Shri B. Sidderaju, Muncipal president Mandya and Shri A. Yogesha, President Shri Dharmasthala grama avirudhi Yojane.  More than 500 women of self help groups and students of Horticulture College Mysore and forestry college Mudigere attended the program. Dr. Meera Pandey, Principal Scientist, Mushroom Research lab, IIHR, gave the orientation regarding the cultivation of different varieties of mushrooms, the method of processing and value addition, methods to fortify daily diet with mushrooms to enhance nutrition and developing culinary entrepreneurship through mushroom fortified products. Dr. Senthil Kumaran, Principal Scientist, Section of Agric. Engg., IIHR, talked about the low cost farm design for small scale production and mechanized mushroom farms for high end production. Dr. Sujatha, ADH, Dept. of Horticulture, Biotechnology center, Hullimavu gave a demonstration about oyster mushroom cultivation. Books and pamphlets in Kanada were distributed for the benefit of the participants. Mushroom fortified rasam powder and chutney poodi developed at IIHR were also given for sensory evaluation which was liked by everyone. The participants showed a great enthusiasm and stated that it was completely new information for them. The women were highly impressed by the information pertaining to the different ways in which mushrooms can be added to everyday diet for enhancing nutrition. The program ended with a vision to train more numbers of trainers and establish RTF bag production unit to enhance mushroom consumption at household level.
