Central Horticultural Experiment Station (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar observed Swachchta hi Seva programme
Central Horticultural Experiment Station (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar organised various activities during 11th September to 2nd October 2019 to commemorate Swachchta hi Seva programme. Initiating series of programme Dr. G. C. Acharya, Head of the Station, administered the Swachh Bharat Pledge to all the staff members. It was followed by the cleanliness drive by the staff members at Syed Mumtaj Ali High School, Jadupur, Dumduma in the vicinity of the Station. The school children were made aware about the dangers to the environment caused due to the wide spread usage of single-use plastic materials. Head of the Station Dr. G. C. Acharya, Principal Scientist Dr. P. Srinivas and technical officer Sri S. Majhi (I/C Swachha Bharat) along with the Principal Sri. Niranjan Mahapatra spoke extensively on various aspects of plastic pollution and mitigation strategies. Students, staff and officials of the Station participated in Sharmdaan program to clean the school campus.
An awareness programme on collection and disposal of plastic waste was organised for the benefit of the staff of the station. During the programme a guest lecture by Sri Sambit Kumar Nayak from Sri Ganesh Recycling pvt ltd. was arranged wherein he highlighted the extreme problems caused by the plastic pollution to the soil, water, flora and fauna. He also suggested various measures to mitigate the menace of plastic pollution. He called for segregation of household waste at source, composting of bio-waste, and recycling of other recyclable waste. He gave emphasis on the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and explained the virtues of ‘two bin one bag formula’ being followed in various cities of India. Dr. P. Srinivas Principal Scientist and Sri S. Majhi coordinated the programme while Dr. G. C. Acharya presided over the proceeding.
On the occasion of the 150th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, a programme was organised in the premises of the office where in floral tributes were offered by Staff to the Father of the Nation. Several staff members put forth their views on the importance of observing the 150th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and the importance of the cleanliness in the work place, homes, schools, and other public places. All the Staff members appreciated the efforts of the sanitation staff and field staff engaged in the cleanliness in the campus. Head of the station Dr. G. C. Acharya, addressed the gathering while highlighting the need for concerted efforts for keeping our nation clean and making it free of single use plastic. All staff joined in a Shramdaan programme to clean the area in front of the office main gate and collect and dispose the plastic waste from the premises. Sri S. Majhi, technical officer and in-charge of Swachch Bharat abhiyan in the Station co-ordinated the programme at the station with the active help of Sri Manoj Pattanaik, Sri B. C. Patra, Sri. B. N. Paikkray, Sri. Gobinda Naik, and Dr P. Srinivas, Principals Scientist.
