ICAR-IIHR organized Field day on Velvet Bean (Mucuna pruriens) varieties Arka Dhanvanthari, Arka Daksha and Arka Shukla at Bachahalli village, Gundlupet taluk, Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka on 6th August, 2019
A Field day on Velvet bean varieties, Arka Dhanvantari, Arka Daksha and Arka Shukla developed and released by ICAR- IIHR, Bengaluru was organized on 11 acre plot of Mr. D.K.Tiwari, a progressive farmer at Bachahalli Village, Gundulpet Taluk, Chamrajnagar District on 6th August, 2019. The field day was organized jointly by the Divisions of Floriculture and Medicinal Crops and Social Sciences & Training, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. About 45 farmers from Bachahalli and nearby villages participated in the event. Mr. Basavanna, Panchayat President, Bachahalli, Mr. Basavaiah, Mr. Kemdegowda, Dr. Hima Bindu.K, Principal Scientist and breeder of the Velvet bean varieties, ,Dr .B. Narayanaswamy, Principal Scientist, Division of Social Sciences & Training, Dr. Rohini M.R, Scientist, Division of Floriculture and Medicinal Crops and staff from the Division of Social Sciences & Training, ICAR-IIHR, Bangalore were present on the occasion. Dr. B. Narayanaswamy welcomed the gathering along with a brief introduction about the activities and technologies developed by ICAR-IIHR, Banglore. Dr. K.Hima Bindu spoke on the multiple uses of velvet bean and explained in detail about salient characteristics of different non itchy, high yielding varieties bred in the crop. She also gave information about other released varieties of Medicinal crops like Centella asiatica and Aswagandha from ICAR-IIHR . Mr. Tiwari, the farmer shared his experience how he has succeeded by adopting the Velvet bean varieties from IIHR since 5 years. Currently he is growing them in 11 acres of land. He explained that velvet bean crop is low input requiring, enriches soil fertility and reduces weed population. He expressed that he was able to get good returns by cultivating non-itchy, high yielding and high L-Dopa containing IIHR varieties he was able to make a tie up with pharmaceutical industries like Pentacare and Himalayas and has become a regular supplier of Mucuna seeds to them. He has also supplied the seeds to Uttanranchal, Chattisgarh and other parts of Karnataka. He also expressed his interest to adopt other IIHR technologies also. Mr. Basavanna, Panchayat President also expressed his views on success of IIHR varieties and appreciated Mr. Tiwari. The participants expressed interest to visit and know more about IIHR technologies of ICAR-IIHR . The meeting ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Narayanaswamy followed by the field visit to the Mucuna field.
