ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research observed Parthenium Awareness Week from 16th to 22nd August 2019

In commemoration with the Implementation of   ‘Parthenium Awareness Week’ every year to make farmers and general public aware about the menace of Parthenium, ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru had organised the following programmes to observe the ‘Parthenium Awareness Week’ from 16th to 22nd August 2019 at the main campus and regional stations.

At the Main Campus, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru

                On 16.8.2019, Parthenium clearing was organised at Block VIII, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru.
Dr. M. R. Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IIHR along with scientists, technical staff, skilled supporting staff and contractual labourers participated in the programme and were engaged in uprooting of Parthenium in IIHR main campus.

                An Awareness campaign was organised on 17.8.2019 at Ivarkandapura village Panchayat and Parthenium clearing was performed in collaboration with villagers and staff members of ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru totalling approx. 100 members. The villagers were explained about the ill effects of Parthenium and the strategies to manage them through integrated measures.

                On 19.8.2019, awareness campaign was organised to students of St. Annes High School at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru and 52 students participated. They were enlightened about the health problems created due to Parthenium and its remedy by Dr.Mandakranta Bhattacharya, Medical Officer, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru.   On 20.8.2019, awareness campaign was conducted inside the campus of Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka School, Hesaraghatta. Around 150 students were educated about the Parthenium menace. Students were also engaged in uprooting the Parthenium by using gloves and masks.

                On 21.8.2019, a mass drive of Parthenium cleaning was undertaken in Ivarkandapura village panchayat involving nearly 150 villagers and staff members of ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. Villagers and farmers were encouraged for total eradication of Parthenium and its possibilities involving various management options.

                On the final day, an awareness lecture was organised in the Forenoon of 22.8.2019 at College of Horticulture (COH), University of Horticultural Sciences, Bengaluru campus. Dr. R.C. Jagadeesha Dean, COH and 350 B.Sc. (Horticulture) students participated in the programme. Dr.G.R.Smitha, Scientist, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru enlightened the students about Parthenium and its management. Dr.Mandakranta Bhattacharya, Medical Officer, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru explained the health issues due to Parthenium and its medications.

A demonstration on composting of Parthenium residues was also conducted on the same day at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. Dr.Selvakumar, Principal Scientist, Division of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry demonstrated the composting process of Partheniumand its benefits in nutrient recycling. Around 100 scientific, technical and skilled supporting staff members of ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru participated in the programme.

At Regional Stations & KVKs of ICAR-IIHR

Parthenium Awareness Week was also observed in the regional stations and KVKs of ICAR - IIHR. Parthenium clearing drive was steered in the campuses and awareness was created about Parthenium menace at CHES, Bhubaneswar; CHES, Chettalli; KVK, Hirehalli and KVK, Gonikoppal to to educate the staff, students, research scholars, outsourcing personnel, and field workers about the dangerous effects of parthenium weed on human and animal health
