International Conference on Plant Protection in Horticulture: Advances and Challenges (ICPPH-2019) held at ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research during 24-27 July 2019
To mark the successful completion of 25 years, the Association for Advancement of Pest Management in Horticultural Ecosystems (AAPMHE), a scientific society hosted at ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR-IIHR), Bengaluru organized the International Conference on Plant Protection in Horticulture: Advances and Challenges (ICPPH-2019) at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru, during July 24-27, 2019. About 300 delegates from India and abroad (Egypt, Mexico, Nepal, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, UK and USA etc.) participated during the three-day deliberations on emerging issues related to pest management in horticultural crops.
The conference witnessed the attendance of the eminent scientists of national and international repute. Dr. C.D. Mayee, an eminent Plant Pathologist and Former Chairman, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function. The Guests of Honour were Dr. P. Parvatha Reddy, Former Director, IIHR; Dr. B.N.S. Murthy, Horticulture Commissioner, Government of India, Dr. Claire Beverley, Head, Plantwise Knowledge Bank, CABI. During the inaugural function, Dr. V.G. Prasad Award for Best Paper was awarded to Dr. Divya Balakrishnan, Dr. P.D. Kamala Jayanthi and Dr. Mahesh R Ghule. Dr. S. Sithanantham Biennial Award for Excellence in Biological Control Research was awarded to Dr. T. Venkatesan, Dr. R.K. Murali Baskaran, Dr. S. Sriram. The AAPMHE fellowship was conferred to Dr. Dhanjay Naik, Dr. T.N. Shivananda, Dr. Vageshbabu S Hanur, Dr. Achala Paripurna, Dr. J. Jaya Kumar, Dr. Sandeep Singh and Dr. K. Suresh. The conference was organized under the Chairmanship of Dr. M.R. Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IIHR and Dr. M. Krishna Reddy, President AAPMHE as Co-Chairman and Dr. V. Sridhar, Secretary AAPMHE as the Organizing Secretary.
There were seven key note addresses spread over three days. Stalwarts in plant protection like Dr C D Mayee, Dr N K Krishna Kumar, Dr M K Naik, Dr. B V Patil, Dr Abraham Verghese, Dr P K Chakrabarthy and Dr V G Malathi were the key note speakers.
There were 10 technical sessions viz. Biodiversity & Biosystematics, Biological control - Approaches & Success Stories, IPM Modules, Pesticides-Evaluation, Resistance & Residues, Ecology, Host-Pest interactions, SIT, Radiation for Pest Management & Ecosystem services (Pollinators, mushrooms, etc.), Biotechnological Approaches in Pest Management and Transfer of Technology & Public Private Partnership. There were two satellite workshops viz. Behaviour modifying chemicals in insect pest Management and Transboundary Pests and Diseases. The Conference made fruitful scientific deliberations on various tools of pest management, with particular reference to emerging pest problems and stressed for importance of preparedness for tackling them.
There were lead lectures oral presentations and poster presentations. The Plenary session was held on 27th evening. Dr. P.K.Chakravarthy, Member, ASRB was the Chief Guest. He congratulated the society for the successful completion of silver jubilee and highlighted the future plant protection tasks to be addressed without complacency.
This conference was supported by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), The Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) under Department of Science & Technology, National Institute of Plant Health Management (NIPHM), Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), National Horticultural Board (NHB) and National Bee Board (NBB).
