Training on Canopy Management in Mango organized by CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar

Considering the significance of canopy management and plant architecture in sustaining mango production under high density planting system a Training programme on “Canopy Management in Mango under High Density Planting System” was organized by CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar on 15th July, 2022. The program was attended by 90 mango growers of Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh and Khurdha Districts of Odisha. Dr. G. C. Acharya, Head I/c, highlighted the significance of canopy management in mango for yield sustainability under high density planting system. Dr. Kundan Kishore highlighted the various aspects of plant architecture and canopy management in mango planted under high density. He emphasized that plant architecture at initial stage and judicious management of canopy are the most crucial component of mango production especially under high density planting. Dr. Deepa Samant, Dr. P. Srinivas & Dr. Manas Sahoo highlighted the significance of canopy management in enhancing fruit quality, disease management and effective adoption respectively.  

Participants were advised to adopt open centre training system in mango for efficient light interception, higher yield and better fruit quality. Efficacy of Y trellis in enhancing mango yield was also highlighted. The after-care of trees with regard to the management of nutrient, water and pest and disease was also demonstrated. Queries of the participants on various aspects of mango production were also addressed in the interaction session. The program was coordinated by Dr. Kundan Kishore and Dr. Deepa Samant with the help of Mrs. Suchitra Behera and Project Assistants.
