Padma Shri Smt. Saalumarada Thimmakka was honoured in the World Environment Day programme organized by ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) on June 6th, 2019. She inaugurated the 'Biodiversity Park' and mass tree planting programme at ICAR-IIHR.
Dr C. Ashwath, Secretary, Society for Promotion of Horticulture extended a warm welcome to the gathering at a function that was organized before the mass tree planting programme. Mr Rajanna, Member, Board of Directors, National Horticultural Board and one of the guests of honour emphasized that trees are important for bringing rains and hence, mass tree planting is essential. Mr Krishnaiah, Member, Zilla Parishad, Bengaluru Urban urged to save the trees, which are planted during the mass tree planting programmes.
Smt. Saalumarada Thimmakka spoke that children are the future of the country and hence, they should involve themselves in tree planting and thus saving the environment. Dr MR Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IIHR told that recognition for Smt. Thimmakka had come from her hard work and hence the children and others should take the example of Smt. Thimmakka for hard work. Dr TN Shivananda, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, Staff Welfare Committee, ICAR-IIHR had given a formal vote of thanks.
This programme was followed by mass tree planting at Biodiversity Park, wherein students (more than 200) of schools and colleges and staff members of ICAR-IIHR planted tree saplings.
