Woman in Agriculture celebrated at IIHR on 12th Dec, 2014
Woman in Agriculture Day was celebrated at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Hessaraghatta Lake PO, and Bangalore on 12th December 2014. Dr T Manjunatha Rao, Director, IIHR presided the inaugural function. Mrs. Chaya Nanjappa (Nector Fresh Honey), Dr Geetha Suresh (Novel Biotech, Bangalore) and Mrs Susheelamma (NGO, Sumangali Sevashram, and Bangalore) were Guests of Honour. Dr Girija Ganeshan, Chairman Woman Cell at IIHR has given welcome address and emphasized the need to recognize the contributions of all women who are contributing relentlessly to agriculture. Mrs Sushelamma in her address mentioned the importance of organic farming, and indigenous cultivars. Further, she stressed upon providing safe and healthy environment for woman at work place as well as in society. She also condemned the horrific practice of female feticide. Mrs Chaya Nanjappa quoted agri produce processing as a prospective enterprise and motivated the women to become entrepreneurs. Mrs Geetha Suresh reiterated woman as backbone of Indian agriculture and emphasized on adopting improved agriculture technologies like tissue culture to start small business units. Later, mushroom spawn bags were distributed to farm woman to popularize how farm waste could be utilized in remunerative way. Director in his address quoted that a family can be empowered, if a woman becomes an entrepreneur and reiterated the need of women empowerment in research as well as in development sector.
