A.V.V. Koundinya

Primary tabs

He previously worked as a Scientist at ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram and is currently working at Central Horticultural Experiment Station (CHES), Bhubaneswar. He was the recipient of North South Foundation fellowship during UG, ASPEE Agricultural Research and Development Foundation fellowship during MSc and DST-INSPIRE fellowship during PhD. He obtained his PhD degree from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, West Bengal in 2016. During his PhD, he identified stable brinjal genotypes for yield and fruit quality and further established morphological, biochemical basis of fruit and shoot borer resistance besides influence of weather variables on borer infestation in brinjal. At ICAR-CTCRI, he identified phenotypically stable superior cassava clones 8S501 and CR 43-7 with high drought tolerance along with the profuse flowering clones CI-130, FB-1 and CI-448 with high number of female flowers and high per cent fruit set in crosses. He demonstrated the importance of early vigour in cassava to effectively tolerate the mid period drought stress. He introduced the leafiness indicator and relative leaf retention index to quantify the leaf retention and formula for measurement of pith density in cassava under water deficit stress conditions. He also standardized the gamma irradiation dose of varieties Sree Jaya and H-226 of cassava and identified mutants with high yield; dry matter, CMD resistance, yellow tuber flesh and profuse flowering. He was the part of the team that released two cassava varieties Sree Reksha and Sree Kaveri. He further developed cassava hybrids with high yield, drought tolerance and disease resistance. He was instrumental in evaluating 375 indigenous cassava germplasm and publishing the germplasm catalogue. He also contributed in standardizing the cassava synthetic seed technology and pollen cryopreservation of cassava, yams and taro. He was pivotal in popularizing and distributing the planting material of the cassava variety of Sree Raksha and Micronol - a micronutrient formulation of cassava and elephant foot yam along with customized fertilizers in East Godavari and West Godavari district of Andhra-Pradesh through Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan. He was the part of the team that popularised the orange fleshed sweet potato in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya during 2020 under North-Eastern Hill Scheme. At CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar, he is evaluating the segregating progenies of French bean from three crosses for earliness, yield and disease resistance besides evaluating the superior pointed gourd clones for yield and quality. He is actively involved in imparting training to farmers of Odisha on commercial vegetable seed production. He has 5 book chapters, 26 research papers, 3 review articles to his credit. He is also reviewer of the journals such as Journal of Water and Climate Change, Scientia Horticulture, Agronomy Research, Psyche and International Journal of Vegetable Science. He has guided six MSc students so far.
