The station was started in 1947 as Orange Research Station by then Coorg Government and it was handed-over to ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru on 1st February, 1972. Thereafter its foundation was celebrated every year on this date. This year the 78th Foundation Day was organized on 3rd February, 2024. The programme was started with ICAR and IIHR Songs, and lighting of lamps by the Director and the Guests. Dr. Rajendiran S., Senior Scientist & Head (I/c) welcomed the guests and all the participants. The Guest of Honour Dr. M. Senthilkumar, Director of Research, Central Coffee Research Institute, Coffee Board, Balehonnur, Chikmagalur addressed the gathering and expressed that crop diversification and introduction of different suitable fruit crops in coffee based system will be the viable option to attain the sustainability and to enhance the farm income in Kodagu. The Special Invitee Dr. S.K. Tikoo, Tomato Breeder and retired Principal Scientist, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru narrated the significance of the station for high value fruit crops and insisted for upgradation of the station and to start collaborative and PPP mode of research. The Chief Guest Dr. S.D. Sawant, Chairman, RAC and Ex-Vice Chancellor, Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli appreciated the efforts of station in releasing avocado varieties and expressed the need of identification of Phytophthora wilt resistant rootstocks. Further he recalled all the major events that took place in the station when he was working here. Dr. Prakash Patil, Director (A), ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru presided over the programme and talked on importance of the foundation day events and contribution of the station. He also assured that all the necessary steps will be taken to strengthen the station. At the end, Dr. Nayan Deepak G., Scientist, CHES, Chettalli proposed a formal vote of thanks. During the programme ex-employees of the station: Dr. V.V. Sulladmath, Dr. S.D. Sawant, Dr. Indu Sawant, Dr. T.N. Shivananda, Mr. K.V. Varatharaj Acharya, Mr. Ravi M.B., Mr. Monappa B.R., Mr. Sidda S. and all the RAC Members were felicitated. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various sports events that were organized for this programme. Cultural programme was also organized and appreciation prize was presented to all the performers.
