The 21st of June marks the annual observance of International Yoga Day (IYD) in numerous countries, including India. This year, the Ministry of AYUSH has introduced the theme "Yoga For Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (Yoga for the welfare of all in the form of 'One World-One Family'). This theme underscores the essence of Yoga, which fosters unity and inclusivity, encompassing people from all walks of life.
The event commenced with a formal welcome address, followed by an opening remark delivered by Dr. Prakash Patil, Director (I/c), ICAR-IIHR. Dr. Patil emphasized the vital role of yoga in promoting physical and psychological well-being and encouraged the audience to incorporate yoga into their daily lives. Recognizing the holistic benefits of this ancient practice, he stressed its significance in achieving a balanced and harmonious lifestyle.
To illustrate the essence of Yoga, Dr. Sridhar. V, Principal Scientist (Agr. Entomology) at ICAR-IIHR, conducted a demonstration of the IYD protocol. Dr. Sridhar, commenced IYD protocol by enlightening the audience about the origins of yoga and providing insights into the chosen theme for Yoga Day 2023. He further elaborated on Ashtanga yoga, which encompasses the eight levels: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, Dhyana, prathayahar, dhrana, and samadhi. By embracing these foundational principles of Ashtanga yoga, individuals can embark on a transformative journey towards personal growth and well-being. During the event, participants actively engaged in practicing a total of 37 asanas, including pranayama’s. He elucidated the significance of each asana, offering guidance on the dos and don'ts to ensure safe and effective practice. The diverse participation of over 100 attendees, including scientists, students, administrative personnel, and technical staff, exemplified the widespread enthusiasm and support for yoga in the ICAR-IIHR community especially and entire humanity in general.
The event concluded with a formal felicitation ceremony honouring Dr. Sridhar V for his invaluable contributions as the yoga instructor. Dr. G. Senthil Kumaran, Chairman, Sports and Staff Welfare Committee, ICAR-IIHR, delivered a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and organizers for their unwavering dedication in making the 9th IYD a resounding success. As the event drew to a close, the attendees left inspired and empowered, carrying the transformative spirit of yoga within them.
