The sports contingent of ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru had participated in ICAR-Interzonal Sports Tournament held at ICAR-Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur, Rajasthan from 14th to 17th October 2024. The contingent comprising twenty-five men and four women participated both in individual and team events. Dr. Anil Kumar Nair and Dr.G. R. Smitha were the Chief-de-mission and Team manager, respectively. The outstanding performance in the events by ICAR-IIHR contingent earned overall score of 54 points. The ICAR-IIHR was declared the ‘Overall Champion of the ICAR-Interzonal Sports Tournament-2023’.
Among women events, Mrs. Sai Monicalakshmi bagged the gold medal in javelin throw and badminton doubles, silver in badminton singles, table tennis doubles and high jump. Mrs. V. Venkatalakshmamma secured gold in discuss throw, bronze in javelin throw and shotput. Dr. G.R. Smitha bagged gold in badminton singles and silver in table tennis doubles. Ms. Meenakshi bagged one silver and one bronze in 100 and 200 m race and gold medal in badminton doubles. In women’s team event, the team comprising Ms. Meenakshi, Dr. G.R. Smitha, Mrs. Sai Monicalakshmi & Mrs. V. Venkatalakshmamma bagged gold in Women’s 4 x 100 m relay race.
Among men’s individual events, Mr. Velmurugan secured first position in 5 km cycle race, while Mr. B. Mallesh got bronze medal in 400 m race. Dr. G.R. Smitha and Dr. Anil Kumar Nair secured silver medal in the mixed doubles table tennis event.
This is the consecutive second time that ICAR-IIHR has retained the Zonal and Inter-zonal Overall Championship Trophies
