Curtain raiser for ‘International Year of Millets 2023’- ‘Campaign on Nutri- Garden and Tree Plantation’ was organized at ICAR-IIHR-Bengaluru on 17th September, 2021 from 10.0 am to 4.00 pm both on physical and virtual mode.
Dr. Smitha G, Scientist (Flower and Medicinal crops) welcomed the guests, Dr Debi Sharma, In-charge Director, Dr. Pushpa C K, Dr Manjunath B L, Dr. Aghora T S, farmers, students, FPO representatives and staff of ICAR-IIHR fot the function. Morning 10.30 all the participants attended the inaugural function of the event through virtual mode. Lunch was served to all the participants
At 2.00 pm, program of the Institute started with distribution of plants and seed material to the participating farmers and girl students. Around 150 plants of avocado, jackfruit, annona, mango, pongamia and vegetable seed kit (150 Nos) were distributed. Participants were also served with ragi cookies during the program.
Dr. Pushpa Chethan Kumar delivered a lecture on ‘nutri-cereals and their role on human health’ followed by a lecture on ‘role of plantation on sustainable agriculture and rural livelihood’ by Dr. B L Manjunath. Dr Debi Sharma emphasized the importance of minor millets in human nutrition and also how the millets along with vegetables will supplement minerals and protein . Dr. Aghora T S stressed upon the low glycemic index and also rich fibre content of minor millets and its usage in human nutrition.
Dr. Poornima K N extended the formal vote of thanks to all the participants both off and on line. Finally, the program was concluded with the National Anthem. Planting of 135 saplings was done in ICAR-IIHR campus by all the participants
