ITMU & CPC sponsored training program on ‘Pollen Cryopreservation in Solanaceous and Cucurbitaceous Vegetables’ at Division of Plant Genetic Resources from 19-23 September, 2016
The training was offered to officials from Rasi Hyveg (P) Ltd., Bangalore. The inaugural programme was graced by the presence of Director, Dr.M.R.Dinesh, ICAR-IIHR, Dr. Sudha Mysore, Chairperson, ITMU & CPC, staff, Division of PGR and the participants from Rasi Hyveg Seeds Pvt Ltd Mr.Manjunath, Mr. Vijender Singh, Mr.Natraj and Ms. Chandrika. The importance of cryopreservation, its application and success stories were discussed by the speakers followed by the introductory greetings.
The training module started with the lecture by Dr. P.E. Rajasekharan, Principal Scientist, Division of PGR, on the science of cryopreservation and pollen viability assessment techniques. The practical sessions included pollen extraction, in vitro viability assessment, staining, pollen storage and in vivo fertility assessment of the crops viz., Tomato, Brinjal, Chilli, Bottle gourd, Ridge gourd, Cucumber, Watermelon and Okra. The practical sessions were handled by Anushma.P.L, Linta Vincent and Divya.R.K. For viability assessment hanging drop method was followed in most of the crops dealt while improved cellophane method was adopted in brinjal. An interactive session was held on 22nd September, 2016 wherein the trainees could clarify their views and doubts regarding their respective crops with the technicians of Vegetable Crops Division.
the valedictory function of the training programme was held on 23rd September, 2016. Ms. Anushma.P.L, Scientist, Division of PGR welcomed the gathering followed by the feedback from the participants regarding the training program. The report of the training program was presented by Ms. Linta Vincent, Scientist, Division of PGR. Dr. C.K.Narayana (Chairman, PME Cell) and Dr.M.Sudha (Chairperson, ITMU & CPC) and Dr.P.C. Tripathi (I/c Head, Division of PGR) appreciated the training program and expressed their impression on relevance of organizing such industry linked events for technology dissemination.
The Director, ICAR-IIHR, Dr. M.R.Dinesh distributed certificates to participants for successfully completing the training followed by his valedictory address wherein he spoke about relevance of pollen cryopreservation and complemented the Division of PGR for conducting such relevant training programmes. The trainees got the opportunity to interact with the scientists assembled in the valedictory function regarding their current and future line of work. The function was concluded with the vote of thanks from Ms. Linta Vincent, Scientist.
In short, the training program was a great success and the participants were immensely benefitted from the programme which they expressed during the valedictory function
