ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru designed and developed set of machinery for cultivation of onion. These machinery includes onion seed extractor, onion seeder, onion set planter, onion harvester, onion detopper and grader. Dindigul, Nammakal and Salem districts are major onion growing areas in Tamil Nadu. Training cum demonstration of “Machinery and Technology for Onion Cultivation and Processing” was organized to create awareness among the onion growing farmers of these regions in collaboration with the respective KVKs as detailed below. The programme was organized under ICAR- CRP on Farm Mechanization and Precision Farming and SCSP of ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru.

In all these programmes, Dr. G. Senthil Kumaran, Principal Scientist enumerated the importance of programme and welcomed the gathering. Need of adopting new technologies from Research Institutions and necessity to utilise the Government Schemes were emphasised by the speakers during their presidential and special addresses. Dr. A. Carolin Rathinakumari, Principal Scientist illustrated the machinery for onion cultivation. Dr. V. Sankar, Principal Scientist gave information on ICAR-IIHR released variety and Technologies. Experts from concerned KVKs participated in the panel discussion and clarified farmers queries. Arka Onion seeder and Arka onion detopper was demonstrated to the farmers. Inputs like Shade Net, Crop Shield, Crop Supporting net, Fruit fly traps, Delta stick, Arka vegetable seeds ( Tomato, Chilli , Beans), Vegetable seed kits, Arka vegetable special, AMC, Neem Soap, Pungamia Soap and grow bags were distributed to 80 SC beneficiaries identified by the KVKs under SCSP funds of ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. The events were coordinated by Dr. G. Senthil Kumaran, , Dr. A. Carolin Rathinakumari and Dr. V. Sankar, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru.
