Central Horticultural Experiment Station (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar in collaboration with Livelihood Alternative and NAFED organised a training program on “Good Agricultural Practices in Mango” on 6th December, 2022, to highlight the importance of key interventions in mango for yield sustainability and quality improvement especially under high density system. Dr. Kundan Kishore highlighted the plant architecture, canopy management, efficient management of nutrients, significance of plant growth regulators and post-harvest management and Dr. Deepa Samant spoke about orchard establishment technique and selection of varieties. Importance of integrated management of pest and diseases in enhancing mango yield was emphasized by Dr. P. Srinivas. Mr. Sambit Tripathy, Chief Managing Director, Livelihood Alternatives and Mr. Govind Murmu, Nodal Officer NAFED appreciated the initiatives and efforts taken by CHES, Bhubaneswar for supporting and strengthening the fruit growers of the state by transferring and imparting technical know-how on scientific orchard management and also expressed their willingness to have more collaborative programs for the benefit of fruit growers of Odisha.
Scientific management of mango under high density plantation, after-care of trees with regard to nutrient, water and pest management were demonstrated. Queries of the participants on various aspects of mango production were also addressed and they were advised to adopt open centre training system in mango for efficient light interception, higher yield and better fruit quality. Participants expressed their satisfaction over the training program and realized the need of Good Agricultural Practices in mango for better yield and quality. The program was coordinated by Dr. Kundan Kishore and Dr. Deepa Samant with the help of Mrs. Suchitra Behera, Sh. Manoj Patnaik and project assistants. The program was attended by more than 30 participants comprising of mango growers, officials of Livelihood Alternative and NAFED, and faculty of Siksha-O-Anushandhan University, Bhubaneswar.
