World Soil Day was organized by the CHES, IIHR-Bhubaneswar, at Sumana Pradhan Village of Khordha district on December 5th2023. In alignment with the global theme, " Soil and Water: A Source of Life" CHES, Bhubaneswar embarked on a mission to raise awareness about the significance of soil health and sustainable agricultural practices. The critical role of soil in agriculture was highlighted by Dr A.V.V. Koundinya, Scientist (Vegetable Science) The villagers were educated about the significance of soil. He emphasized the significance of sustainable soil management practices and techniques to enhance crop productivity while preserving the health of the soil. Dr. Satyapriya Singh, Scientist (Agric. Entomology) highlighted the critical importance of soil nutrients for optimal plant growth. He lauded the causes of soil detoriation due to intensive farming, non-judicious use of chemical inputs. He emphasized remedies such as cover cropping, agro-horti-forestry system, conservation horticulture and organic farming. & the need for soil testing, Dr. Singh highlighted its role in examining soil health and safeguarding Mother Earth for future generations. Mr. Manoj Patnaik and Mr. P.C. Majhi (technical staffs, CHES) reiterated the pivotal role of soil for horticulture and its conservation for sustaining the biodiversity and ecosystem for long run. There was an interactive sessions where villagers/farmers shared their experiences and challenges related to soil management. The students from Siksha O Anusandhan Deemed to be University undergoing 2 months attachment training were also participated in the programme and interacted with the farmers. The program was co-ordinated by Dr. A.V.V. Koundinya, Scientist (Vegetable Science), Dr. Satyapriya Singh, Scientist (Agril. Entomology) and technical staff of CHES (Mr. Manoj Patnaik and Mr. P.C. Majhi).
