About The Organisation:
The Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) Bangalore, established in 1967 is the largest Institute in South East Asia engaged in research on all basic and applied aspects of horticulture. It has on its various faculties over 200 scientists (many of them trained abroad in advanced laboratories) having expertise in diverse disciplines supported by necessary infrastructure of men and material. The Institute is well-equipped and has substations at Chettalli in Kodagu, Hirehalli in Tumkur, Karnataka and Bhubaneswar in Orissa. It also has ultra modern facilities for all aspects of basic research and has been declared as the Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Post Harvest Technology by ICAR. Till now these facilities and know-how are being utilized by ICAR Institutes and Agricultural Universities only. It has been decided to offer the expertise of IIHR (Consultancies and services) to institutions, industry, persons etc. in an effort to promote public-private enterprise on an attractive basis.
Activity Profile
At present the Institute is engaged in research on fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, aromatic and medicinal plants and mushrooms on the following aspects:
- Breeding for high yield, quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses
- Field techniques for achieving high marketable yield in normal and problematic soils.
- Integrated pest and disease management.
- Nutrient and water management
- Weed management.
- Pesticide residue management
- New product formulations.
- Conserving, enriching and exchange of plant genetic resources.
- Basic and need based applied research on all aspects of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry.
- Advanced research in Biotechnology including tissue culture.
- Fabrication of horticultural machinery and evaluation of packages for long distance transport.
- Economic analysis of production and marketing.
- Software/database development and statistical analysis.
- Studies on impact of Training programmes and Transfer of Technology.
