Dr. Debi Sharma served as Director (Acting) of ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, from 01/06/2022 to 12/12/2022. She did her doctoral research in Agricultural Chemicals from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and has more than 33 years of progressive experience in research on pesticide residue dissipation and phytochemical analysis in horticultural crops, soil, water and other commodities at ICAR-IIHR. As PI of an ICAR funded project, she established the Food Safety Referral Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility, at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru. The laboratory is accredited by NABL for food contaminant testing (chemical and biological) in fruit and vegetable products. The laboratory is one of the Referral laboratories of FSSAI and an empaneled laboratory under APEDA. She was Centre in charge, All India Network Project on Pesticide Residues at ICAR-IIHR, Bangalore, for 3 years and successfully completed projects funded by ICAR, NMPB, RKVY, FSSAI as PI. As Co-PI she also helped establish a Regional Honey Testing Laboratory at ICAR-IIHR with funding from the National Bee Board (NBB). Contributed to the fields of new residue analytical protocol development, studies on adsorption and mobility of pesticides in soil, uptake of pesticides and PGRs in crops, suitability of pesticides for use in IPM/IDM programs, dissipation of pesticides under protected cultivation, monitoring of pesticide residues in farm gate and market samples of fruits, vegetables and other food products, studies on phytochemical estimation in pomegranate cultivars and vitamin D estimation in mushrooms. Developed a herbal wash (Arka Herbiwash) to remove pesticide residues and food borne spoilage organisms from the surface of fruits and vegetables. She was also part of a team which developed a technology for Vit D enrichment of Elm Oyster mushrooms. She is a member of Scientific Panel on Pesticide Residues of FSSAI, Pesticide Residues Sectional Committee FAD 27 of BIS, Evaluation Committee (NPOP) of APEDA, India. Published 60 research papers, 10 technical bulletins, many popular articles and guided 3 M.Sc. and 2 Ph.D students as Chairman Advisory Committee.
